Content Objective: Students will create a college plan using SIMS University gaming system. Students will research plans of study in colleges. Language Objective: Students will write goals: short range, mid range, and long range regarding their college goals. Students will write a personal essay in preparation for a college essay including anticipated plan of study. Vocabulary:major, bachelor degree
Delivery: 1. Students will have a discussion about goal setting. Students will determine the difference between a short, mid and long term goal in small groups. 2. Individually students will write three goals: short, mid and long term regarding going to college. Examples can be taking AVID class in middle school to learn to work well in groups and take good notes; enroll in honors and AP courses in high school; applying for particular universities and colleges based on plans of study. 3. Students will play SIMS University to get an idea of what college life will be like and how to make good decisions on campus. They will have to simulate applying for college, going to classes, and managing time among other things. 4. To follow up, students will write a learning log to reflect upon their experience playing SIMS University. 5. Students will write a personal essay as if it were part of their college application to add to their portfolio.
Assessment: use rubric to evaluate goal setting sheet (AVID); learning log; and use writing process for college essay: rubric for evaluation.
Extension: SIMS University can be played to help students with time management unit.
